Cancellation of course

It is really disappointing that our course is to be cancelled. I also find it very disspiriting (if there is such a word) I finally found the gumption to go back to school and this happens. If the Uni does really & truly close the course I suppose we all will have to adjust to this and adapt to it as best as we can. (not very good english) Words cannot express how angry and disappointed I am with this & will need to sort out in my mind whether I want to proceed with the course. It was not a good weekend for me, my beloved Saints (footy team) were thoroughly thrashed by Collingwood. This was the icing on the cake.

Web 2.0, library 2.0

Web 2.0 is about utilising the social networking sights and the systems available in our electronic age. Examples of these are blogs, podcasts, RSS feeds, wikis and flickr.  Library 2.0 is about libraries retaining their current users while making themselves relevant for and drawing in new users. This is where web 2.0 comes into the picture.
Libraries need to be relevant to everybody to stay current and modern so that they do not become dinosaurs. Many people are using the social networking sites to find out what is going on in the world, to find out information and to keep in touch.
Libraries need to be update with these facilities and utilise them to the fullest so that they can as I have said to stay relevant as people will no longer utilise the facilities available in and at libraries

RSS

I do not think that my blog about RSS was completed properly so I am doing another one.
RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. I subscribed to five and none were to a library as I could not find a library that is using RSS. The services that I could find that are using RSS are news services eg nine msn, seven news and the ABC. RSS is a system that allows news to be given in a truncated form, just giving the main points, eg giving the football scores & the best players but not giving much details about the game. I find that RSS is a good way to obtain information quickly and easily, therefore helping me to keep in the loop, especially when I do not have a lot of time up my sleeve.

Libraries can utilise this facility to either send out or receive information. They can establish RSS and load information about what is going on, what is available and what is events are coming up at the library. People want to be able to find information quickly and easily and not to spend a lot of time having to read a long worded message.

Tags

I am blogging again. I might get the hang of this sooner or later. I am having problems adding tags. I suppose I will figure it out sooner or later but if anyone can help me eg pointing me in the right direction or just giving me a few tips would be wonderful.
I am really struggling to get my head around all the different networking sites that are online. Probably because I am not interested in them.

I went to the Stkilda v Geelong footy match last night and been a Saints supporter I was slightly on the happy side with the win by the Saints.

23 things RSS

I am doing another blog as part of my 23 things. This blog is about RSS. The handout gives the following site "http://plcmclearning.blogspot.com/2006/08/8-make-life-really-simple-with-rss.html"as a site to refer to but this site does not exist anymore. The handout also asks to subscribe to five sites including a library. I could not find any library that has RSS, I have subscribed to ABC news, the AFL, google news, national nine news and Yahoo 7 national news.
What I have found out about RSS is that it has two meanings, they are real simple syndication and rich site summary.According to Ezine @rticles, web site http://ezinearticles.com/ "the real power of RSS is indicated in the term syndication. You can get information or messages across the web instantly to your websites, your readers and/or subscribe. RSS is a simple technology that helps to distribute your information whether it is product reviews, special offers, resource announcements and articles by syndicating across the net. In order to take advantage of this simple technology, you can start by setting up a blog, as blogs are RSS ready. RSS helps you keep yourself updated with the accurate and best information available on the web."
RSS can be a great tool for libraries as this is one of the great ways for them to advise library users of the latest news and activites going on.

Blogging

I have finally posted a blog, in fact two because I did the first one incorrectly, about information literacy. It is an interesting concept and I understand the relevance of blogging for libraries but I have problems with any social networking site been used to update other people about personal details about oneself. Though they are an easy way to update ones friends when one is travelling. To do one facebook entry saves time doing individual postcards, letters and emails to ones friends and family, giving more time to see & do activities for where one is visiting.

Information Literacy take two

Information Literacy is knowing when information is required and knowing how to access, evaluate and learn from the information obtained.
The following are from a websites and describe information literacy in a more expansive fashion.
"The term information literacy is generally defined as the ability to access, evaluate, organize and use information from a variety of sources. Being information literate requires knowing how to clearly define a subject or area of investigation; select the appropriate terminology that expresses the concept or subject under investigation; formulate a search strategy that takes into consideration different sources of information and the variable ways that information is organised; analyse the data collected for value, relevancy, quality and suitability; and subsequently turn infomation into knowledge (ALA 1989). This involves a deeper understanding of how and where to find information, the ability to judge whether that information is meaningful and ultimately how best that information can be incorporated to address the problem or issue at hand."
ALIA statement on information literacy.
Information literacy can contribute to:
*Learning for life
*The creation of new knowledge
*Aquisition of skills
*Personal, vocational, corporate & organisational empowerment
*Social inclusion
*Partipative citizenship &
*Innovation and enterprise
Therfore, as a matter of priority, and at all levels, library and information services, professionals embrace a responsibility to promote and facilitate the development of the information literacy of their clients. They will support government, and the corporate community, professional, educational and trade union sectors and all Australians"
